SCHOOL CLOSURE TASKS

Dear Kingfisher parents and carers,

We currently find ourselves in a position that none of us could ever have possibly imagined. Even though the school will be closed for the foreseeable future to the vast majority of our pupils, we are going to pull together as best we can as a school community to support the children’s well-being and learning. 

With this mind, I will be posting daily English, maths and topic activities for your child to complete at home during this period of school closure. Children still attending school (as part of the Key Worker childcare arrangements) will also be following the same activities so that the learning provision for all of our pupils remains equitable. 

Reminder: Could all children still attending school please bring home learning packs with them.

This may seem like a lot of information in one go but I want to be as clear as possible about what the daily learning tasks will look like.

What does my child need to do every day?

Simply put - some maths, English and topic activities. I will also provide a link to a daily act of worship.

  • Mathematics (Approx. 1 hour)

1. Maths Skill Checks in the black folder

These skill checks have been tailored, as best I can, to suit your child's age and stage. They are deliberately repetitive in style to help your child develop familiarity in what is expected each day.

Work through all of the questions on the Skill Check worksheet.

There may be some questions your child cannot do – either support them to answer the question or tell them to move onto the next question; there will be others they can do.

Answers can be written on the sheet.

Only one sheet per day please.

2. White Rose Problems of the Day in the black folder

Work through the problems set for the day on the photocopied sheet.

I may have written in the black folder which section I would like your child to do (top brown or bottom blue questions). If I have not written an instruction, please tell your child to try all of the questions.

Answers can be written in the small grey maths book. 

Only one sheet per day please.

Miss Willgress will post the answers to these questions the following day.

What if my child finishes these maths tasks too quickly?

Any extra time can be spent working through the CGP textbook at their own pace AND / OR practising their maths skills on the MATHS SHED website. 

**OPTIONAL EXTRA**

The White Rose Maths Hub https://whiterosemaths.com/homelearning have prepared daily home learning lessons which you may like to access with your child. For each day's lesson, they have prepared a short teaching video with a follow-up worksheet. We use White Rose resources almost every day in school so your child would be familiar with the format of the worksheet (no printer required – answer the questions in the grey maths book). This could be a good opportunity for your child to learn new skills, rather than practising  those already taught.

Just follow these five easy steps…

  1. Go the website given above
  2. Click on the set of lessons for your child’s year group.
  3. Watch the video (either on your own or with your child).
  4. Find a calm space where your child can work for about 20-30 minutes.
  5. Use the video guidance to support your child as they work through a lesson.

If you do decide you’d like to follow these lessons, I would suggest they replace the White Rose Problems of the Day. Don’t try to do too much, especially at first. 

 

  • English (Approx. 1 hour)

1. Reading Comprehension in the black folder

Read the photocopied text and answer the questions on the sheet.

Only one sheet per day please.

2. Grammar Skill Check 1 in the black folder

Once again, these skill checks have been tailored to suit your child's age and stage. 

Work through all of the questions on the Skill Check worksheet.

3. Writing Tasks

Occasionally during the week, I may ask the children to do a creative written task. 

This can be done in the red English books provided in your pack.

4. Daily Storytime

I will provide a link to a BBC audio story every day.

5. Reading for Pleasure

Everyday, try to spend 10-20 minutes (or more if you want!) reading a book of your choice just for fun!

What if my child finishes these English tasks too quickly?

Any extra time can be spent working through the CGP textbook at their own pace AND / OR practising their reading skills on the Read Theory website or Dyslexia Gold (only available to certain pupils). 

 

  • Topic (45 mins - 1 hour)

I need to make sure that topic activities are accessible to all, and cover skills from the wider curriculum. Therefore, I have decided to choose activities from the Learning Projects developed by the Robin Hood Multi Academy Trust. The first project focuses on THE FAMILY. Tasks may involve discussions, art and craft activities or short pieces of writing. 

 

  • Daily Act of Christian Worship (15 mins)

Every day I shall post a link to BBC Together, an assembly series for KS2 children. Every episode includes a song, a story, a reflection & prayer and opportunities for discussion. I will choose episodes from the BBC's vast back catalogue which I think will be appropriate either to current events or to the children’s past or current learning.

 

How should the rest of ‘home learning time’ be spent?

It’s your choice! One of the advantages of home learning is that your child’s interests can lead the way. Your child could …

Go outside and just play, write a diary, do some colouring-in, exercise, cook, make junk models, play board games or card games, draw in a sketchbook, make Lego models, plant some seeds and watch them grow, create a scrapbook, learn a new language (download the Duolingo app to help with this), build a den, research a topic of their own choice, learn a new skill like origami, identify birds visiting the garden – the list is endless. 

 

Help, I’ve never home-schooled before and I’m feeling overwhelmed

This is an unprecedented time and we are all having to make rapid and challenging changes to our daily lives. Our children in particular are now faced with quite dramatic shifts in their familiar routines, whether staying at home or remaining in school, and it will take them a while adjust to their new circumstances. Therefore, I'd like to stress that there is no pressure to complete all of the tasks given for Day One, or any other day for that matter … just do what you can, when you can.  The tasks are there as a guide to help you manage home learning; however, if you want to spend a whole day doing art activities, cooking & baking or building a den in the garden - I strongly advise you to do so!
